Smart Meter Coordination Group (SM-CG)

The Smart Meter Coordination Group (SM-CG) acts on the M441 mandate and consists of representatives from the European Standards Organisations (ESO's), the EC (DG Enterprise and Industry, DG Energy), utility associations, manufacturers associations, consumer organisations, regulators and European research projects.

ESMIG supports the SM-CG with the definition of a functional reference architecture of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), the definition of a glossary of commonly used terms and finally, with the definition of functional requirements by Use Cases. The definition of Use Cases has been the input for the IEC (TC8) and Smart Grid Coordination Group (SG-CG) that will collect and maintain Smart Grid Use Cases.

Smart Grids Task Force (SG TF) and related Expert Groups

ESMIG is supporting the four Expert Groups of the European Task Force Smart Grids:

EG1 – Smart Grid functionalities

EG2 - Regulatory recommendations for data safety, data handling and data protection

EG3 - Roles and Responsibilities of actors involved in the Smart Grids Deployment

EG4 – Smart Gas Grid

In addition to their active participation in these groups, the technical ESMIG working groups (CTG, EBSII, MUM) review the deliverables of the groups when they are sent out for consultation. The deliverables of the EG2 are of significance because they have an immediate effect on the requirements for Smart Meters and the related infrastructure.

Smart Grid Coordination group (SG-CG)

The former Joint Working Group (JWG) Smart Grid Standards that started in May 2010 has now taken the responsibility to act on the M490 mandate regarding Smart Grid standardisation. ESMIG is represented in the steering committee and in the various working Groups of the SG-CG:

- Selection of a first set of standards

- Definition of a Reference Architecture

- Design of sustainable standardisation processes

- Smart Grid Security

ESMIG ensures that the work of the Smart Grid Expert Groups and the SM-CG is taken into consideration and finds its way in the work packages and the results of the SG-CG.

Working Group Measuring Instruments (wgMI)

This working group is responsible for the definition and maintenance of EC directives concerning Measuring Instruments, of which the MID is the most important.

ESMIG is one of the industry associations represented in this group. Proposals for changes in the MID are reviewed by the MUM group of ESMIG while its comments are taken into account and discussed by the wgMI.

European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI)

ESMIG is represented in the European Electricity Grid Initiative, which is one of the six European Industrial Initiatives (EII) laid down in the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET).

ESMIG's RPG group formulates responses to the public consultations of the EEGI.
