3 February 2009 – Brussels.

CENELEC (the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and ESMIG (European Smart Metering Industry Group) have signed a cooperation agreement to create standardised tools for energy consumption optimisation in Europe.

CENELEC and ESMIG recognise the value of cooperating in all fields of electrotechnical standardisation that are directly or indirectly related to Smart Metering technologies. Contributions by ESMIG to establish and promote consensus on proposed draft specifications will contribute to the ongoing European effort to harmonise Smart Metering activities and specifications.

This will foster interoperability and innovation while ensuring full support of the internal market objectives. The purpose of the agreement is to formalize a cooperative relationship between the parties in standardisation activities in areas of common interest. These include quality of service, energy efficiency, energy management, metering, network connections and customer service.
