ESMIG welcomes the European Commission’s upcoming Electrification Action Plan as an important milestone in accelerating Europe’s energy transition.
Electrification is vital for decarbonisation, energy security, and affordability — but only if it’s smart, flexible, and consumer-focused.
Key priorities for unlocking its potential:
- Make electrification a cornerstone of Europe’s energy security
- Set a clear EU electrification target, aligned with smart meter rollouts
- Set a smart meter deployment target of 80% by 2030 with minimum harmonized performance standards
- Ensure real-time data access implementation to empower consumers and enable flexibility
- Enable market access and fair remuneration for demand-side flexibility
- Introduce tariffs that reward flexibility and reduce grid pressure
- Enable customer participation and control of local flexibility
Smart grids, digital infrastructure, and consumer participation are essential to make electrification affordable, efficient, and secure.
