Enabling successful utility digitalisation programmes

At Enlit Europe in Milan, in December 2021, ESMIG’s Technical Director, Willem Strabbing, moderated a highly relevant session that gathered experts from utilities and manufacturers. Together they explored the challenges of digitalisation in the energy sector and the current status of standards regarding interoperability and smart meters for multi-commodity.

During this session Willem set the scene, stating that early on in discussions with the European Commission, it was understood that the infrastructure of smart meters should be interoperable. CEN/CENELEC/ETSI was mandated to establish a coordination group to explore the status of interoperability standards for the industry, and to understand if further coordination and examination is needed to make this happen.

This coordination group still functions today, monitoring the work on standards and what needs to be done to reach interoperability in addition to having standards.

The Clean Energy Package, key for the energy sector, requires the development of an Implementing Act that describes how to reach interoperability for access to metering data and encourages Member States to use a European approach and existing standards in their national smart meter roll out plans.

Presentations from standard organisations and technical committees highlight the ongoing work, the current situation across Member States and what else is required to ensure a smooth, interoperable, standardised landscape across the EU.

What the session recording to hear what the experts had to say!
