Position paper on the Regulation on Future-Proofing Electricity Prices

Europe’s energy system is becoming more digital, electrified, and decentralised.

As EVs, heat pumps and distributed renewables become increasingly widespread, smart meters are evolving from billing devices into critical digital infrastructure, providing the grid visibility, flexibility, cybersecurity, and consumer engagement needed to power the energy transition.

In its latest position paper, ESMIG calls for:
• EU-wide smart meter deployment targets of at least 60% by 2030 and 80% by 2032, based on certified metering points and aligned with the EU’s growing electrification needs
• Minimum functional requirements to enable flexibility, real-time data exchange, and dynamic tariffs
• Updated cost-benefit assessments that reflect the full value of smart metering for consumers, the electricity system and the energy transition
• Strong cybersecurity and trusted supply chains for critical energy infrastructure.

Completing the smart meter rollout is a prerequisite for a digital, flexible, and future-proof European electricity system.
