Meet our member: MicroEJ

ESMIG’s mission is to support its members by representing the views of Europe’s smart energy solution providers on key European policy and regulatory issues and driving a green transition that fully empowers consumers. This is only possible with the help and support of our members. A very good reason to get to know them better!

We spoke with Semir Haddad, Chief Product and Strategy  Officer at MicroEJ to find out more about the company and their thoughts on the role of smart energy solutions.

What is your company’s mission?

At MicroEJ, our mission is to bring the benefits of software scalability, flexibility, and agility to the embedded world. We empower manufacturers of energy and metering devices to accelerate their digital transformation—designing smarter, secure, and more sustainable devices, faster. With VEE Energy, we enable the same kind of software-driven innovation that revolutionised the smartphone industry, but tailored for the strict constraints of the energy sector.

What drove you to become an ESMIG member?

Joining ESMIG was a natural step in our commitment to the energy sector. We want to support the community with cutting-edge software technologies that help smart meter and grid manufacturers adapt quickly to new regulations, business models, and sustainability goals. ESMIG offers a unique platform to align our roadmap with industry priorities and to advocate for interoperability and future-proof solutions.

How does ESMIG help your company to achieve your goals and support your company’s mission?

ESMIG creates a collaborative environment where technology providers and policymakers converge. This gives us the insight and context needed to anticipate emerging needs and provide timely, relevant software solutions. Whether it’s about compliance, efficiency, or innovation, the dialogue at ESMIG helps us continuously fine-tune our value proposition for the energy market.

What do you see as the biggest challenge and opportunity for the energy industry in Europe today?

The energy sector is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation. The main challenge lies in the complexity of integrating renewable sources, ensuring grid stability, and improving consumer engagement. The opportunity? Turning metering and distribution devices into smart, updatable assets that adapt to dynamic energy requirements and contribute actively to the grid’s intelligence.

Where do you see smart energy solution providers making a difference in addressing these challenges?

By embracing modular, app-enabled architectures, solution providers can extend device lifecycles, improve feature rollout, and cut development costs. MicroEJ enables this shift: manufacturers can deploy digital services securely and flexibly, even on constrained hardware—making smart meters and gateways future-ready and interoperable from day one.

In an ideal world……energy devices would be as flexible and updatable as smartphones—capable of evolving through software to meet new standards, user needs, and sustainability goals.

Some facts about the company:

  • We launched MicroEJ in 2012 and since then have invested over $45 million in research and development, most of it self-financed.
