Meet our members: Interview with Gridspertise

ESMIG’s mission is to support its members by representing the views of Europe’s smart energy solution providers on key European policy and regulatory issues and driving a green transition that fully empowers consumers. This is only possible with the help and support of our members. A very good reason to get to know them better!

We spoke with Luiz Gazulha Jr, Head of Business Strategy and Partnerships at Gridspertise to find out more about the company and their thoughts on the role of smart energy solutions.

What is your company’s mission?

Gridspertise is committed to driving the digital transformation of electricity distribution grids, enabling utilities to modernise operations, improve efficiency, and enhance sustainability. Our mission is to provide utilities with advanced digital tools and platforms to meet the growing demands of the energy transition actors and deliver a new era of sustainable and reliable smart grids. By embracing cutting-edge technologies and fostering innovation, we aim to create resilient, flexible, and customer-centric grids capable of integrating renewable energy and accommodating distributed generation. Sustainability underpins all our efforts, guiding our technology development and operational processes as we carefully select options that minimize our footprint on both people and the planet.

What drove you to become an ESMIG member?

Joining ESMIG aligns with our mission to promote the widespread adoption of advanced metering infrastructure and the digitalisation of power grids across Europe. We see ESMIG as a critical partner in advocating for forward-thinking regulatory frameworks that support smart grid technologies and demand-side flexibility. By actively engaging with policymakers and institutions, we contribute to shaping a European energy ecosystem that embraces innovation, standardises technological practices, and removes barriers to digital adoption. While many ESMIG members are competitors, we recognise the association’s unique position to influence policy and drive industry-wide progress.

How does ESMIG help your company to achieve your goals and support your company’s mission?

ESMIG’s advocacy for smart meter adoption and its push for standardisation directly support Gridspertise in speeding up grid digitalisation. By collaborating with European institutions, ESMIG provides a platform to contribute on regulations that enable utilities to embrace digital solutions, such as demand-side management and advanced metering. Additionally, ESMIG’s focus on modernising technical standards and fostering data-driven energy ecosystems aligns with our commitment to accelerate grid innovation while ensuring interoperability and security. These efforts pave the way for greater flexibility and sustainability across Europe’s energy networks.

What do you see as the biggest challenge and opportunity for the energy industry in Europe today?

Europe faces the dual challenge of integrating increasing amounts of renewable energy and distributed energy resources while enabling end-use electrification and maintaining electricity security, along with the need of modernising aging grid infrastructure. This transition requires unprecedented investments and a shift toward digitalised, demand-driven energy systems, while bringing a new regulatory framework for this new era. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity: by embracing digital innovation and advanced grid technologies, Europe can lead the way in building flexible, sustainable, and consumer-focused energy systems. The energy transition offers a chance to redefine how grids operate, prioritise energy efficiency, and empower consumers as active participants in the energy market.

Where do you see smart energy solution providers making a difference in addressing these challenges?

Smart energy solution providers are critical in addressing Europe’s energy challenges by enabling the adoption of advanced digital technologies and creating a framework for grid flexibility. Providers contribute to standardising technology, ensuring interoperability, and developing robust cybersecurity measures. Moreover, they enable real-time grid management and better integration of renewables, storage, and EVs. By offering innovative solutions for demand-side management and advanced metering infrastructure, providers support utilities in improving efficiency, reducing outages, and empowering consumers with actionable insights into energy use.

In an ideal world…Europe would embrace a unified regulatory framework for grid digitalisation, ensure robust cybersecurity for energy systems, and deploy flexible, intelligent technologies to empower both utilities and consumers in achieving a sustainable and inclusive energy transition.
