Meet our members: Nigel Hughes introduces Itron

ESMIG’s key mission is to support its members by representing the views of Europe’s smart energy solution providers on key European policy and regulatory issues and driving a green transition that fully empowers consumers. This is only possible with the help and support of our members. A very good reason to get to know them better!

We spoke with Nigel Hughes, ESMIG’s President and Vice President of Regional Sales at Itron, to find out more.

Who is Itron? Itron enables utilities and cities to safely, securely and reliably deliver critical infrastructure solutions to communities in more than 100 countries. Our portfolio of smart networks, software, services, meters and sensors helps our customers better manage electricity, gas and water resources for the people they serve. By working with customers to ensure their success, we help improve the quality of life, ensure safety and promote the well-being of millions of people around the globe.

What is your company’s mission? We provide critical infrastructure solutions that help our customers better manage energy, water and city services to create a more resourceful world. To achieve that, we partner with cities and utilities to build secure, reliable, connected communities that offer a multitude of new services and opportunities.

What drove you to become an ESMIG member? We have seen great benefits from ESMIG’s work to promote interoperable, standardised and secure smart metering solutions throughout Europe. ESMIG was at the forefront of designing, demonstrating, and promoting the societal benefits that can be gained from the deployment of smart meters, together with the responsible and secure use of smart metering data.

How does ESMIG help your company to achieve your goals and support your company’s mission? The association has established itself as a leading reference for smart metering expertise and plays an active role in EU policy and regulation to promote the next generation of industry solutions.

What do you see as the biggest challenge and opportunity for the energy industry in Europe today? The creation of a competitive energy market that makes energy cleaner, more affordable and more reliable whilst achieving our climate and energy goals in a timely manner before 2030. The opportunity is a growing acceleration of requirements to meet the needs for decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation.

Where do you see smart energy solution providers making a difference in addressing these challenges? We are a group of dedicated companies focused on helping digital transition throughout the energy sector. Raising the awareness and benefits that can be harnessed by the rollout of smart meters and solutions for societal benefit.

In an ideal world…we’d have interoperability and interchangeability across Water, Electric and Gas that would enable real-time access to data that is secure and reliable and allows consumers to make informed decisions on their energy and water consumption.
