Launched on 3 June, the European Commission’s Roadmap on AI and Digitalisation in energy presents measures to digitalise Europe’s energy system while ensuring sustainable digitalisation.
As a key development, it recognises smart metering as a key enabler for consumer participation, demand response, dynamic electricity pricing and a more efficient use of Europe’s electricity grids.
Additionally, a new legislative proposal in 2026 will accelerate the rollout of smart meters across the EU, aiming to achieve minimum smart meter coverage in every Member State.
This is a great development and something ESMIG has advocated for. The completion of smart meter rollouts across Europe is a cornerstone to accelerate the transition, empower consumers, unlock flexibility, enable electrification, reduce renewable curtailment and better use the existing grid capacity.
We look forward to supporting the Commission on how to accelerate Europe’s digital and clean energy transition through smart metering!
