At ESMIG’s interoperability demonstration Kamstrup demonstrates how DSOs can remotely change the SIM profile in a smart electricity meter. IDEMIA provides the SIM cards and the infrastructure for the provisioning, which is implemented according to the GSMA SGP.32 standard.

For a DSO it is important that electricity smart meters have reliable and future proof connectivity, as the meters have a lifetime of 15 years or more. The option to change the SIM profile increase the longevity of cellular connectivity, as it is possible to change to another mobile network operator if the current operator ceases to provide services for a particular technology (“insurance” use case).
